One person who visited and played this instrument said (he said it out loud) “I have seen some of the ifnest guitars in the world, and this one is as ifnest as a guitar gets.” We had no idea what he was talking about but he left quietly. It is said that Kim Walker of North Stonington is felt by many to be the ultimate builder of Acoustic acoustic (we mean really acoustic) guitars extant. It emulates the paradigm of greatness promulgated by the C F Martin company when they introduced their OM-28 guitar that was made only for five years in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s. The features of the Walker include an extremely high quality and select Sitka spruce top proffering considerable cross-grain and silking. The fingerboard is ebony, inlaid with 7 inlaid etched diamonds.
The tuners are Waverly open-gear with butterbean button knobs; the top is bordered in wood marquetry herringbone, the soundhole with three concentric rings of multi-ply spruce and ebony. The bridge saddle is bone and mounted “through” the ebony carved bridge. The backstripe is zipper bordered in ebony and maple, the back in crème-black, the sides in single ply crème. The black headplate is inlaid with the “Walker” script pearl logo and the back of the headstock is stamped “K.C. Walker, N. Stonington, CT.” The same pressure stamp appears on the back brace. The pickguard is large, teardrop and tortoise shell celluloid. This guitar excels where other, lesser, instruments come around the running track for the 4th time and then lie down on the grass making moaning noises. Mr. Walker’s OM is the Ultimate Accomplishment in wood and phosphor bronze. This six-string bun filled with honey and yields remarkable depth of tone and volume and, like all of Kim Walker’s guitars is in the most demand of just about any vibrating vessel of stringed perfection. And for good reason. If you can find a better sounding or more beautiful (in its simplicity) instrument out there in the hinterlands, I hope you will phone or email and let me know what it is. The person that gets to own this meticulous morsel of man made majesty will be considered a hero to his or her friends, to the audience at large, to the entire population of North Stonington, CT and to every other guitar player on the face of the planet who knows just how good a Kim Walker guitar is.
