This model features Dolphin profile soundboard bracing for the unique Lowden voicing, a 5-piece neck with ebony wood-bound fingerboard, Gotoh 503 machine heads, a bone nut and saddle, all solid AAA grade tonewoods, all wood bindings and purflings and rosette and a split two-piece saddle for accurate tuning. The fingerboard is neo-classical, meaning no dots on the front, but there are eight side markers. The headstock overlay is East Indian rosewood, contrasted by the underlined script mother of pearl Lowden logo and the gold plated tuners with their ebony buttons. The inside of a Lowden guitar is finished so cleanly that it looks as completed, smooth and elegant as the front side of most other guitars. The Lowden F-32 guitar is finished in matte, which feels more comfortable to the hand, easy on the eyes, and which does not reflect while on stage. Lowden guitars are generally thought of as the fingerstyle players’ choice, especially at home with alternate tunings, but when played in standard Spanish tuning it blows away all of your preconceptions.
Regarding this model in particular George, the builder, says: “Over the years the Model -32 has become more sought after especially because of its full-bodied and yet very clear defined tone. The Sitka spruce top helps to balance the rosewood’s warm fullness. The F, or medium sized guitar, is warm, full and clear but with a more focused projection making it ideal for flat-picking and fingerstyle.” Its back and sides are East Indian rosewood, its soundboard is Sitka spruce, the rosette is made from rosewood, sycamore, walnut and mahogany. George Lowden says that the bindings are figured sycamore, and they might be, but they sure look like maple to us, the purflings are the same materials as the rosette, and, although the fingerboard is ebony the bridge is a luxurious piece of figured rosewood, the neck is 5-piece (for strength and beauty) – comprised of three sections of mahogany and two of rosewood.
Now we get to talk about the sound. This guitar sounds absolutely amazing, surprising, stunning, awesome, remarkable and breathtaking. And speaking of breathtaking, we invite you to come over and sniff the soundhole, ‘cause those cedar kerfings inside are about to make us swoon from pure olfactory delight. The sound is clean and clear with tremendous string-to-string separation and transparency. Yeah, you’re thinking, I’ll bet he says this about all the girls. But in this instance the guitar is deserving of all the praise we can possibly provide it. It raises the bar (well, maybe the barre also) to a whole new level -- producing a tone and a timbre that is complex and shaded in a multitude of colors. If you already own (as so many of our customers do) the Martin, Gibson, Taylor, Collings, Santa Cruz, Breedlove, Goodall, Huss & Dalton and Bourgeois, this superfine Northern Ireland-made hand-crafted gem of an acoustic guitar will give you a whole new direction in which to advance.
