Its top is bordered in “rope” wood marquetry of alternating crème and black parallelograms, and the top has twin rings of rope that form a sort of slightly separated, wide herringbone appearance. The bridge is ebony and has a rolled (compensated) bone drop-in saddle; the sides are bound in rosewood with a thin line of ebony-spruce-ebony on each border and also the back; the back stripe is small zipper wood marquetry. The back of the neck is one piece of barber-pole tiger striped maple; the back and sides show beautiful curl as well. The heel cap is rosewood and so is the end graft; the factory provided a gold strap button at the bottom side and a prior owner supplemented that with a gold strap button in the treble side of the heel in the proper location. The top has mellowed to a tawny orange hue. This is a very good sounding maple and spruce small jumbo which is the same composition as a Gibson J-185 and produces a “different” tone than many players are used to hearing – since many players own mahogany or rosewood back and side guitars. Nevertheless this has a warm and embracing sound with good clarity, good volume and a rich, fulfilling tonal response.
