Gibson (used, 1949) J-45

Tag No 39-1477 Used

#2852-35, sunburst top, in excellent condition with a newer TKL American Vintage Series hard shell case.

How do they do it, those always-surprising mandolin persons?  How do they manage to find super clean, original 62-year-old Gibson J-45 guitars like this?   From its radiantly original gold Gibson postwar script peghead decal set against a jet black background and its “Kluson Deluxe” double-line logo ivoroid button tuners whose knobs are in remarkable shape and original - to its original teardrop-shaped tortoise shell colored pickguard – this is a superb re-visitation to the second term of Harry S. Truman.  The fingerboard and bridge are Brazilian rosewood; the top is bound in three-ply with ivoroid outermost; the back is singly bordered in ivoroid.  The soundhole rosette is a thin ring of ivoroid, a thin ring of black and then a wide ring of ivoroid.  The nut appears original and is carved of bone.

This humble yet notable Gibson J-45 shows normal light signs of use and playing time, much less than one would expect to see – there is finish checking, yes, and there is a chip at the bass waist near the top binding, there are some small nicks around the headstock as one nearly always finds and around the edge of the soundhole; a finish chip on the bass side near the waist.  There are scratches, dings and scuffs here and there but again less than expected.  The neck is especially clean and so are the back and the sides. The top shows some pick scratches and dings, but fewer by far than one would reasonably anticipate. In our opinion the top of the rosewood bridge could, in the past, have been shaved just a little, but the bridge saddle is reasonably high and bone and appears original.  This guitar’s sound is the icing on the Oryx and Crake (with a tip of the triangular cake slice to Margaret Atwood).  It sound quality is simply amazing, effortlessly exquisite, sonically sublime, and also twelve miles north of Exceptional.    This is the killer sounding postwar Gibson that you have been searching for lo these past 5 decades.   This is, quite frankly, the Big One, Hannah.
