Custom Woods

Huss and Dalton offers a variety of custom woods. The Following is a partial list and a few comments about them: Mahogany Family

Quilted Honduras Mahogany - This is the same as “regular” Mahogany, but shows a beautiful round quilted figure

Flamed Philippine Mahogany (Light Red Meranti) - This is a Mahogany “cousin” producing a similar sound and color and displaying a vibrant wide flame figure. Only a small quantity is available.

Quilted African Mahogany (Sapele) - This is also a mahogany cousin displaying a brilliant tight quilted figure.

Rosewoods

Honduras Rosewood - This is a very dense tone wood similar in tone and density to Brazilian Rosewood. It has a reddish brown color and often displays bold black grain lines and small knots. It produces a very loud, bright, powerful tone.

Brazilian Rosewood - The mother-of-all tone woods is very hard and dense, producing a loud brilliant tone similar to Honduras. It’s color is brown/black with bold black grain lines. Quantities which meet our standards are very small and it is priced accordingly.

Other Woods

Claro Walnut - Quickly gaining in popularity, Claro is the most colorful and spectacular of Walnuts. The figure is often a tight flame appearing in different areas of the back and sides. It produces a clear tone with extra mid-range suitable to a variety of styles.

Maple - Curly Maple produces a rich warm tone with crisp trebles preferred by many players. It’s high figure makes it one of the prettiest stained woods.

Koa - This Hawaiian tone wood is a light golden color with a spectacular flamed figure. It produces a sound somewhat warmer than other tone woods in this category.

Top Woods

Appalachian Red Spruce - This top wood is very white in color with some reddish vertical grain lines. It is the stiffest of spruces and therefore considered an ideal top wood. It produces a very powerful sound which is less apt to “wash out” when played with a flat pick.

Englemann Spruce - This is very white in color, with very tight grain. It’s tone lends well to finger style or light flat picking. It is very responsive to a light touch.

Cedar - Cedar tops are golden brown in color and tight grained, producing a warm, rich appearance and tone. Cedar responds well to a light touch, but can wash out when played hard. Cedar is a preferred top wood among Classical players.
