D'Angelico

Finding a John D’Angelico mandolin at a reasonable price is like winning the lottery.  He made, according his logbook, just 47 mandolins out of the approximately 1,163 pieces he is thought to have built in total, or at least there are just 47 entered into his log book.     How many of these were made in roundbelly is not known.  In our forty years in business we have found (and sold) only one other Neapolitan D’Angelico mandolin.

And now for something entirely different:   We have never seen one of these before.    John D’Angelico, considered the finest independent guitar builder of the 20th Century, or at least for the first two-thirds of that century, made a keystone model that he called “New Yorker.”   This was an elaborately decorated instrument, made of the most select woods and built on a large platform (possibly because John was vertically challenged) measuring approximately 18” in body width. $30,985 at our Discount Price, or $29,995 at our Cash Discount Price.

John D’Angelico (1905-1964) was, of course, the premier independent guitar builder of the first three quarters of the 20th century. What is as beautiful as a D’Angelico mandolin? The last numbered mandolin D'Angelico entered in his log book was #174 which was dated 1954, and then he entered #185 dated 4/19/52 which doesn't say "mandolin" but it does say "Pts." Which might mean a "mandolin with 2 points." In the annals of great mandolins of our ancestral past, the John D’Angelico hand-made stands apart in the hierarchy of historiography.
